Black Maria

I dreamt there was a fire in my bed
and woke to find a girl beside me
suffering with fever.

It was down below zero and she was wet through.
I stood her up, stripped off the sheets
and walked her round.

In the end she started drinking coffee,
could close her eyes and put a finger on her nose.
I asked her to leave, she was fine.

We’d met before,
introduced by a friend
with the same interests.

Last night she came to my door
and I showed her a needle, saying
“It’s sharp, it’s still sharp.”

It was late and I was tired
and in the early hours epidemics
can be easily forgotten.
