For those on the verge of leaving

I have no drug
for what ails you
although less whiskey
often equals less worry.

Each of these
lives we’re given
(and who does that
giving anyway?)
is used up
in a particularly
personal way.

I do know
that one should be
very, very certain
before you leave
and then leave
so no piece
of your heart
is any way
left behind.

I have always managed
to do this.
But then that may be
some rare facet
of my personality.
Or, instead
just amorality.

When it seems as though
there is nothing left
don’t look back
to times before, others
the warmth of memories
that have swollen
that may even lie
to you through time.

When you do leave
don’t look back.
